3 steps to a clean, organized wardrobe

It just seems impossible to keep our wardrobe neat and tidy. Trust us, we know. Sometimes having to push away all those piles of clothes to get to that dress at the back of the wardrobe feels like a full upper body workout. As much as we hate to admit it, the amount of clothes we squeeze into our wardrobe is about close to defying laws of physics, with some items we have not worn for over a decade.

Gym sweats, party dresses, work formal, PJs. We may only have one season in Singapore, but we still have long lists of occasions we require different attires for. This calls for a need to rethink how we organize our wardrobe, to introduce a good system and structure to it.

All it takes is a little discipline, a determined mind and a Saturday afternoon to finally give our wardrobe a good clean up in three simple steps.

Step 1: Show no mercy

pile of clothes

We dread it, but what has to go, has to go. Instead of focusing on what you can afford to throw, think about what you really want to keep. Do not let the “maybes” occupy space in your closet for years and years. The matter of fact is, you will probably always be able to find better go-to pieces than these “maybes”.  Keep only what you really like and will definitely wear in the future.

We also have those pieces of clothing we hold on to just for keep-sake. We am guilty of it too, with our secondary school uniforms still sitting in our wardrobes, to be brought out only during days of reminiscence (or company D&D events). While it is alright to hold on to a few of these for old times sake, too many of them just becomes a useless expense of space.

How about that maxi you spent a bomb on but never got to wearing? Stowing it in the closet does not write off the cost already spent. The same goes for the pair of heels that were simply too painful to wear out of the house.

It is hard to say your goodbyes to these once cherished pieces. But in Singapore, there are many ways for you to give these preloved items a new lease of life. Take part in a flea, sell them online, or donate them to those in need! Of course, there are always your siblings and cousins there on your receiving end of your hand-me-downs.

Clearing out these items makes space for better organization, and of course, more clothes!

Step 2: Design and optimize

Before you fill all that empty space with more clothes, do take a moment to rethink and re-conceptualize the space in your wardrobe. Be your own little architect – measure and allocate spaces for different types of clothing.

This is where you can let your creative mind go wild. There are no limits in what you can use in your house to create new spaces in the closet! Think hooks, shelves, baskets, racks, and see what can go into your little project. Remember to reuse what you already have, and only buy what you need.

Also, choose and get products that can withstand daily use, and do not get worn out easily. This is definitely worth the investment in time and energy, as an orderly closet organization goes a long way in ensuring your wardrobe remains tidy in the months ahead. At the end of the day you want a closet that still looks organized even as you pull and throw pieces of clothing around during mad morning rushes to get to work.

Step 3: Play it smart

As you replace your clothes back into your wardrobe, arrange them in a way that makes most sense to you.

Personally, organizing it by function (for gym, work, parties, sleeping etc.) works best for us, but there are plenty of other ways to do it as well – by colour, by style, by frequency of usage and so on. Most importantly, use all available space and make it beautiful – as a motivation to make sure it stays neat, and to best bring out that fashionista in you!

So there you go, three simple steps to give your wardrobe the good clean up it deserves once and for all. It definitely is more tedious than how we make it sound, but every bit as worth it. And if you don’t have time to try out our advice, you can always add closet cleaning on to your next Helpling booking – find out more.
